Now autumn has arrived and Halloween is just round the corner, you might be starting to plan where to take the kids in October half term and looking for local Halloween events.

Somerset and Bristol always get into the spooky spirit of Halloween!

Visiting a pumpkin patch is great fun. Read our blog post where to find the best pumpkin patches in Somerset.

Halloween is a great time for family events and days out. To help you get out and about with your little monsters we have put together a list of outdoor trails, spooooky craft activities, a range of autumnal family days out for Halloween, plus some special spooktacular Halloween events in Somerset and Bristol for 2023.

Best Halloween Events in Somerset 2023

Mendip Outdoor Activity Centre

Where: Lyncombe Drive, Churchill. BS25 5PQ.

The Zombie Outbreak is coming! Your help is needed this Halloween to join Mendip Activity Centre’s Zombie Outbreak Response Team. Choose your weapon from axes, bows and rifles. Are you brave enough?

All archery, air rifle, axe throwing, archery active and tobogganing sessions are Halloween themed.

Noah’s Ark Zoo PumpkinFest

Wookey Hole and Caves

Attention all witches and wizards! Prepare to dive headfirst into the enchanting realm of Halloween magic at Wookey Hole, the home of Halloween. After exploring the caves, everyone can join in the Giant Pumpkin Trail and solve a mystery to win Halloween treats. Head to the Scoob! 4D cinema experience, spooky circus show, museum, soft play, monster golf, fancy dress competition and meet the Wookey witch!

Cheddar Gorge and Caves

Where: Cheddar Gorge and Caves, The Cliffs, Cheddar, BS27 7QF

It’s time to party with the Ghost of Cheddar Man this October half-term. Cheddar Caves are hosting a special “Day of the Dead” style event where you join The Ghost of Cheddar Man  festivities on a trail around Gough’s Cave and there’s even a reward to take home with you! Also, you will explore the Dreamhunters at Cox’s Cave, Beyond the View, Jacob’s Ladder, the Cliff-top Walk and the Museum of Prehistory.

American Museum and Gardens, Bath

Where: Claverton Manor, Claverton Down, Claverton, Bath, BA2 7BD

Join in throughout October half term for a cool, spooky day out at the museum with a classic American Trick or Treat atmosphere. There will be lots of family activities, a scavenger hunt in the autumnal gardens and a fun potion trail around the manor house. Visit the LEGO bricks exhibition and build something weird and wonderful for the brick Hall of Fame Gallery, and enjoy some seasonal Halloween treats at the American Garden Deli. Why not get into the spirit of Halloween and come in a costume!

Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, Wells

Come dressed in your best-est and most gruesome for a scare of stories MWAHAHAH!!! (but not TOO scary) with the grimace of ghostly teeth, devilish meetings (told first-hand by Old Nick himself – in puppet form) and a night in the Inn with a wig that turns white with fright!

Somerset and Dorset Railway

Halloween at the Station – Join us for an atmospheric Halloween Train ride at Midsomer Norton. There will be Halloween activities and the shop & buffet will be open. Train tickets are All Day Rovers so cover travel on as many trains as you like.

The Helicopter Museum

Enjoy a Halloween Family Fun Day at the Helicopter Museum in Weston super Mare.

An amazing day of Spooky fun for the whole family includes watching live giant bubble shows in the indoor arena. Meeting the costumed characters on the prowl and exploring the haunted graveyard. Climb into the pilots seat of some of the helicopters and try on a pilots helmet. Have your face painted and have your photograph taken in front of the movie themed backdrops.

Amazing Animal Adaptation at the Fleet Air Arm Museum

Join the ZooLab team at the Fleet Air Arm Museum during October Half Term, for a series of hands on, animal-tastic shows. Get close up to the claws, fangs, venom and slime to see how the animals survive in the wild.

Halloween Trail at Yeovil Country Park

Price: £2/Child; Under 3’s FREE

Join in the fang-tastic fun day out in the beautifully autumnal setting of ‘Ninesprings’. Pick up a trail leaflet from the frightful ‘Friends of Yeovil Country Park’ stall (opposite Ninesprings Café) anytime between 11 am – 2 pm and follow the pumpkin markers through the eerie woods. Find the missing letters hidden at several marked stops along the way to help craft a spell. At the end of the trail you will find a witch or a wizard, be sure to tell them the missing word so they can cast their spell to conjure up a prize.
 
A buggy friendly/little legs short route will be available and clearly signposted. 
 
The trail takes around one hour to complete and the last entry will be at 2 pm.

 

Ocean Adventurers, Cheddar

The Lab at Hestercombe House and Gardens

Strange things have been occurring at the Hestercombe Lab.

Dr Smith and Dr James have spent the last year experimenting and finding new ways of reaching the supernatural. They recently made a breakthrough, unfortunately they have now disappeared and are nowhere to be seen!

This Halloween follow the clues hidden around the gardens to find the culprit behind the spooky goings on at Hestercombe.

As well as our spooky trail, we have free interactive bubble shows and bubble play zone for all of the family on the Marquee Lawn and free storytelling in the Bat Roost (both Monday to Friday).

FEARless at Avon Valley

The Museum of Somerset, Taunton

Halloween comes to the museum. Visit the museum after dark for some spooky fun! Come dressed in your creepiest costumes and be ready to explore the Museum by torch light as we turn out the lights for a night of family fun under cover of darkness. Take part in a spooky craft activity and follow our special Halloween Mystery Trail around the Museum. There’ll be someone waiting at the end!

Who: Suggested age range is 5 to 11 years. Pre-school children are welcome but the event is aimed at older children.

Weston Museum

  • Adventures in time and space – 60 years of Doctor Who art exhibition. This is the largest collection of original and digital art from and about the programme ever shown in one location.

Bowood House and Gardens

A kids Halloween festival near Gloucester is a frightfully fun day out for all the family during October half term…if you dare! Pumpkin patch

Berkeley Castle

Ghoul School is an interactive, self-led audio extravaganza that will teach your young thrill seekers all they need to know to become perfect little monsters. Along the way, they will encounter a spooky array of teachers who’ll impart their delights, frights and vampire bites. Enjoy roasting a marshmallow in the woodland area from 2 pm to 4 pm (included in the admission ticket). 

When: Ghoul School is available from Sunday 23rd to Wednesday 26th & Sunday 30th October (closed every Thursday – Saturday).

Primrose Vale Farm Shop and PYO

Pumpkin field and Halloween Trail trail that takes you around the farm to discover various challenges, tasks and puzzles.  There’s a choice of 2 trails – one for pre -school age, and one for older kids.

Cattle Country Farm Park

Cattle Country’s Pumpkin Patch has thousands of home-grown pumpkins and gourds to pick! So grab your wellies (strongly recommended), a wheelbarrow and pick your perfect pumpkin.

Westonbirt Arboretum

Where: The National Arboretum, Tetbury, GL8 8QS
 

Autumn is the best time to visit Westonbirt Arboretum. Family activities include The Autumn Family Trail – The Ballad of Birtha.

Birtha is the woodland spirit of autumn, and she’s feeling a bit under the weather.

To help Birtha get back to her colourful self, follow the trail to find her woodland friends, all of whom will have something to help her!

This trail is aimed at families with children aged 3-9, but can be enjoyed by all.

Dunster Castle school of magic returns for another adventure. Follow the clues to uncover what’s happened to Dean Clussters.

Ghost Tours 2023: Dare you join a chilling tour of the most haunted parts of the castle? Listen as your storyteller tells tales of ghosts and apparitions, leading the way through the castle, with a few surprises and scares along the way. Ghost tours suitable for age 13 and over.

When: The school of magic trail runs from 7th October to 29th October 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Ghost tours 30th to 31st October 2023 evening (1820-2300 hrs.), booking is essential.

Price: £3 per trail including a prize. Plus normal admission charge applies, FREE for NT members. Ghost Tours £25

Prior Park Landscape Garden

Where: Ralph Allen Drive, Bath, Somerset, BA2 5AH

During October half term follow the autumnal adventure trail around the garden. From spooky to nature related, there’s something to find at every location.

Simply solve the puzzle as you follow the map to claim your prize at the end.

When: Saturday 21 until Sunday 29 October 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Price: Prior Park is participating in Baths Museums Week from Monday to Friday when entry to Prior Park Landscape Garden will be free – charges for the trail at £2 per person still apply.

Dyrham Park

Where: Dyrham, South Gloucestershire, SN14 8HY

October half term spider trail. There will be clues and facts about your favourite eight-legged friends during the half-term holiday and halloween. 

When: 19th October to 1st November 2023 from 10 am to 4 pm.

Price: Normal admission price or free to NT members. Plus the trail sheet will be £2 each which will include a prize at the end.

Dyrham Park, House (National Trust)

Lytes Cary Manor

Where: Lytes Cary, Manor near, Somerton, TA11 7HU

This autumn enjoy the popular Lytes Scary Halloween Trail which runs though October half term or play a game of hide and seek. Learn about some of the wildlife that thrives here and the carved characters and creatures you may spot in the house or simply enjoy some quality time in the great outdoors.

When: 21st-29th October 2023, from 10am to 15:30pm each day

Price: £2.50 per trail (includes a mask, trail sheet and pencil). Normal admission fees apply, (FREE admission to NT members).

Barrington Court

Where: Barrington, near Ilminster, Somerset, TA19 0NQ

Apple collecting in the orchards during half term, a fun activity for all the family to enjoy.

Join the fun in the orchards at Barrington Court to gather in the windfall apples with the mini wheelbarrows. Barrington Court orchards are home to over 100 varieties of apples.

Autumn half term storytelling – Wrap up warm and take a seat on the hay bales to listen to cosy stories about Autumn, harvest and nature. (22nd, 25th, 27th, 29th October, 11.00-11.30 am).

When: 23rd to 29th October 2023

Price: Included in the admission price, FREE to NT members. Booking not required.
