Where is The Newt in Somerset?
The Newt in Somerset is a luxurious country estate nestled in the heart of Somerset, England, situated between the charming market towns of Bruton and Castle Cary. The estate’s main address is Bruton, Somerset BA7 7NG, United Kingdom, with the Farmyard area located at BA9 8DL.

Getting to The Newt in Somerset
I drove, which is the easiest way to explore Somerset. The Newt in Somerset is an hour drive from Bristol and Bath and half an hour from Wells and Frome.
But you can take the train from London Paddington to Castle Cary, which only takes around 90 minutes. From there, it’s a short taxi ride to the estate.
If you’re visiting in the summer from London, you can book The Newt’s Great Garden Escape, which includes first-class train tickets, estate entry, and lunch – a luxurious and well-organised way to make the most of your visit.
Parking Information: The Newt offers a spacious gravel car park for visitors, including multiple electric vehicle charging points and disabled parking spaces. Signs guide you to the visitor car park upon arrival. For those needing extra assistance, transportation can be arranged from the car park to main attractions like the Roman Villa.
Explore the Gardens – Centuries in the Making
No trip to The Newt in Somerset is complete without immersing yourself in the extraordinary gardens, many of which have evolved and been shaped over hundreds of years. What makes The Newt truly special is the way it weaves history, landscape design, and sustainability into every corner of the estate. There’s a notable attention to detail everywhere you look.

The Newt features a diverse collection of themed gardens, each designed to reflect different horticultural styles and historical periods. Each garden has its own feel — some are formal and structured, while others are more wild and natural. Each blend seamlessly with the next. Some of these themes include:
- The Japanese Garden is a peaceful haven, blending water, stone, and minimal planting in a way that creates a calm space.

- The Parabola is a dramatic walled garden in the shape of an egg, and home to 280 varieties of apple tree. It’s arranged in a baroque-style maze, and one of the highlights of the estate.

- The Cottage Garden is full of colourful, pollinator-friendly flowers of different shapes. This walled garden is inspired by Gertrude Jekyll and Penelope Hobhouse, and features a thatched gardeners cottage, now home to bats and swallows.

The Produce Garden showcases seasonal vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers used by the estate’s kitchens and shop.
The Woodland features tranquil trails through shaded forests, perfect for wandering.
Four Seasons Garden was newly opened in 2024 and home to beautiful cherry blossom and roses, spring bulbs and topiary. See if you can find the newt pond.
- The Winter Garden, closed during my visit for an event, is housed in a stunning Victorian glasshouse. Here you’ll discover giant tree ferns, and white tiger lilies.

These gardens are beautifully maintained by the many staff members working on the estate.
TOP TIP:
The gardens are extensive so wear a comfortable pair of shoes.
Walk the Treetop Walkway – A View from Above
Suspended high above the forest floor, the Treetop Walkway, known as The Viper, offers a unique perspective of the estate and surrounding countryside. Walking 40 feet above the woodland floor is a fun experience as it snakes its way through the canopy to the Story of Gardening and cafe.

The Story of Gardening – An Immersive Museum Experience
The Story of Gardening is an innovative museum that takes you on a journey through the history of horticulture, from ancient Persian gardens to contemporary landscape design. Using immersive visuals, interactive exhibits, and a stunning hanging root installation, it explores how humans have shaped—and been shaped by—gardens throughout the centuries. It’s both educational and inspiring, and an absolute must-see for garden lovers visiting The Newt in Somerset.
The Beezantium – Unexpected and Fascinating
The Beezantium is a playful, educational exhibit focused on the importance of bees and pollination. It’s part science centre, part art installation, and ideal for visitors of all ages.

It was interesting to watch the bees in a hive, and get hands-on with the interactive exhibits. The huge viewing window over the lake is beautiful. You’re asked to remove your shoes as you enter Beezantium so your vibrations under foot don’t disturb the bees.

Hidden Gem: The Grotto and Its Mysterious Dragon
Tucked away within the woodland is The Grotto — a shaded, stone-lined sanctuary that feels like something from a fairytale. As you step inside, you’ll find a dragon sculpture nestled in the shadows, adding a whimsical, mythical twist to the serene surroundings. The ambient trickle of water and natural rock textures make this one of the most atmospheric corners of the estate. I definitely wasn’t expecting this!

The Deer Park – A Peaceful Encounter with Nature
One of the most tranquil areas of the estate is the Deer Park, where you can quietly observe herds of red and fallow deer roaming across open grassland and ancient woodland. It’s a magical, serene space perfect for a slow walk. The sight of deer grazing with the Somerset hills in the background is truly unforgettable.

The Roman Villa – A Step Back in Time
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time for a tour of the Roman Villa – this experience lasts about 2 hours and needs booking.
History buffs will love the reconstructed Roman Villa, built on the footprint of an actual ruin discovered onsite. Walk in the footsteps of our Roman ancestors in the reimagined Villa Ventorum. Complete with frescoes, mosaics, and an ancient-style underfloor heating system, it offers an immersive glimpse into life during Roman Britain.
The Newt in Somerset Farm Shop
Before heading home, stop at the Farm Shop, which is a foodie treasure trove. From estate-grown vegetables and cheeses to handmade chutneys and buffalo milk gelato (more on that below), it’s the perfect place to pick up gifts or treats for yourself. I left with cyder, and a preserve I couldn’t resist.

Buffalo Milk Gelato
Oh, and don’t skip the gelato kiosk on your way back to the rest of the gardens. The estate makes gelato from their own buffalo milk, and it is exceptional.

Cyder Tours and Tastings at The Newt
The Newt’s cyder is made using traditional methods with apples grown in the Parabola. The cyder, spelt with a y instead of an i, indicates it’s made from a single pressing of fruit instead of repressing the cider pulp.
Set within the heart of the estate, the Cyder Bar is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates artisanal drinks and local heritage. Here, you can sample a rotating selection of freshly pressed cyders while enjoying views across the gardens and orchards. The bar is the perfect place to unwind after exploring the grounds.

From an area rich with cider-making tradition, The Newt takes its cyder seriously. Their 65-acre orchard, home to over 3,000 apple trees and 70 unique apple varieties, provides the raw ingredients for their award-winning cyders. Whether you prefer something dry, crisp, or slightly sweet, there’s something to suit every taste.
The Newt in Somerset offers an immersive Cyder Tour & Tasting experience that delves into the estate’s rich cider-making heritage. Led by knowledgeable members of the cyder team, these 45-minute guided tours provide insights into the traditional methods and modern techniques employed in crafting their distinctive cyder. During the tour, visitors explore the state-of-the-art Cyder Press and Cellar, where they learn about the slow fermentation process and the variety of heritage apples used. The experience finishes in a tasting session featuring four different cyders.

Top tip: Download the Newt app before you arrive. It features an interactive map, guides to each garden area, and information on current exhibitions and walking trails. It’s incredibly helpful for navigating the large estate without missing anything.
Helpful and Knowledgeable Staff at The Newt
One of the standout aspects of The Newt is the welcoming, knowledgeable staff scattered throughout the estate. Whether it was a gardener answering questions in the Parabola or a guide explaining the Beezantium, everyone added to the experience.
Why The Newt in Somerset is Great for Kids
The Newt isn’t just for grown-ups—it’s an incredible day out for kids too. The expansive gardens and woodlands provide safe, open spaces to run, explore, and learn.
Attractions like the Beezantium, Treetop Walkway, and Grotto with its dragon sculpture spark curiosity and imagination.
